Family Ties - A Cancer Article

Cancer is a harsh reality.  In my life it has been a harsh reality.
14 years ago I had ovarian cancer.  I really don't like talking about it.  I like to just ignore that horrible awful year of my life.  Not only did I have cancer, but my younger sister had breast cancer that same year.   During her two year span with that awful disease, it metastasised and she died at the age of 34 leaving three little ones.  THAT has impacted our family something fierce.

My husband's niece, Angie, has written a very informative and personal article about the BRCA gene, and her decision to have a hysterectomy and double mastectomy.

Anyone with a family history of cancer can (should?) take a look at their family tree and decide along with their doctors if having the blood test is right for them.  (Angie also talks about the insurance implications of the blood test. )

Hi Lisa, I can relate to your post this morning. Angie is a brave woman and a blessing to her family and relatives.

I'm also a breast cancer survivor. I was stage 3 and told that I would probably die of it and that was in December 2002 just before Christmas. I had a radical mastectomy and still alive in January 2012.

I have 6 month of tumor blocker pills to take and then unless there are some new drug I'm on my own. My cancer was estrogen receptive. I'm grateful to still be alive.

You are so right, Cancer radically changes your life. I wish you well my friend and courage. Hugs, JB

I am so sorry that your sister became an angel so young. And, that you battled this dreaded disease. May your niece be forever have God holding His hands around her ... what a decision to make, she is very brave.

Prayers are lifting right now for you all.

Have a beautiful week ~

What an awful thing to go through, Lisa, losing a sister while going through your own battle.

I'm so glad you won your fight and so sorry your sister lost hers.

I'm sure the entire family is grateful that you are still here to love and nurture them all as you do, and I am glad that you mentioned this today. It's important to have lots of knowledge and the experiences of others to consider when you make such difficult decisions as your husband's niece is making.

=)

Every single person that has died in my parents' families has died of cancer. It is an awful, miserable way to go.
And look at you...an inspiration.
